Strong offense early and stellar defense in the late innings compliment each other well.
On Monday, Harrison dominated the baseball diamond at Jack Williams Field and cruised to a 9-2 win against conference foe Huntsville.
The Eagles earned all their runs in the first inning and were shut down the rest of the way.
After giving up the two early runs, Harrison got them back quickly.
Beck Jones led off with a hit and then Noah Moix was walked. Cole Keylon then reached on an error right field and all three runners alter scored. Starting pitcher Breckin Duck recorded a single after sending a pitch to the left field wall.
Cy Madden then got his first at bat and sent a shot over the outfield wall for a homer that sent momentum going the way of Harrison the rest of the way.
Neither team scored until Harrison’s offense got rolling again in the bottom of the third. Keylon began the push with a hard hit that was just within reach of the second baseman and beat the throw to first. Keylon then stole second base.
Dylan Block followed with a hit that dropped into shallow center field that scored Keylon. Block later scored on a passed ball to make it a 7-2 lead for Harrison.
With two outs, Logan Plumlee was walked and then moved to second on a wild pitch. Sloan Barrett earned a RBI with a double to left field that sent Plumlee rounding third and headed home to make it an 8-2 lead for the Goblins.
Harrison’s defense took over the rest of the way. Moix caught a fly ball in left field and then after a Huntsville hit, Keylon fielded a ball in centerfield and rifled a throw to Block at second base that was relayed to Cy Madden at first for the double play.
Jones was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the fourth and Richardson pinch ran. Moix sent Richardson to second with an infield single.
Despite Huntsville’s best efforts with a new pitcher, Block smashed the ball to left field and sent in Richardson for a run before the inning ended.
In the top of the fifth, Harrison’s defense showed some flash by putting on a show all over the field. Moix made a diving catch in left field during the first Eagles’ at bat. Jarrett Wilson then made a backhanded grab at second base and delivered a four-three out.
With one runner on base, Barrett made a diving grab at third and rocketed the ball across the diamond for the third out.
Huntsville’s only runner the rest of the way was from a walk in the top of the sixth that was later thrown out during a double play ball.
Keylon threw from the mound in the seventh inning and a grounder along with two fly balls ended the game.
Richardson and Keylon scored two runs apiece in the game. Moix, Block, Duck, Madden and Plumlee recorded one run each.
Duck took the win on the mound throwing four innings and allowing two runs on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Plumlee threw two innings with one hit and one walk and Keylon finished the game in the seventh with no hits.
The win moves the Goblins to a 17-5 record and continue to run through the 4A-1 with an undefeated 7-0 mark. Harrison welcomes Shiloh Christian on Thursday for the final league game of the regular season before an away game on Friday at Russellville. Shiloh Christian is tied with Farmington for second place in the conference race at 6-1. Russellville is Harrison’s only loss during a 14-1 stretch that began on March 18.
