FARMINGTON — The two undefeated teams in 4A-1 paired themselves on the baseball diamond at Farmington on Thursday afternoon.
Harrison and Farmington each entered the game with 5-0 conference records.
It came down to the final inning as Harrison collected two late runs in exciting fashion to take the road win and the lead in the league race.
The Cardinals got on the board first with a run in the top of the first and the Goblins responded in the next inning.
Goblin junior Dylan Block led off the second frame with a solo dinger over the left-field wall to tie the game at one apiece.
Neither team was able to work around the bases until Farmington found a run in the bottom of the fourth to take back the lead.
The scoreboard read zeroes the rest of the way until the top of the sixth when Breckin Duck earned his third hit of the night with a knock to center field. Trey Richardson pinch ran for Duck and then Cy Madden followed that with a hit to the same spot in center field. Sloan Barrett kept momentum rolling by hitting a grounder past the third baseman for a single to load the bases.
Tyler Hutcheson then laid down a suicide squeeze bunt that put Richardson across home plate for the tying run.
Farmington managed to get two runners on base in the bottom of the inning. With one out and runners at the corners, a Cardinal hitter skied a fly ball to center field.
Harrison’s Cole Keylon made the catch and then rifled a one-hop throw to home plate where Beck Jones was there to make the catch and tag out the runner to end the inning tied at two apiece.
Keylon continued his clutch heroics with a single to the outfield to begin the seventh frame. Block followed with a double to left field to put runners in scoring position.
Richardson then hit a sacrifice fly to left field and Keylon tagged up during the catch and headed home. The throw home was late from the outfield and Keylon scored the go-ahead run. As the play progressee, Block headed to third and the Farmington catcher tried to throw him out. The third baseman watched the ball deflect off his own glove and Block continued his momentum around the base. He then plowed toward home plate for the second run of the inning and Harrison took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the inning where Block threw 14 pitches to end the game with a save in one-two-three fashion.
The Goblins are now 16-5 on the season and 6-0 in conference play.
Thursday’s win on the mound went to Keylon with 6.0 innings, two runs on two hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks.
Madden threw 1.0 innings and earned the save.
Offensively, Block led the way with two hits including a home run while scoring two runs. Keylon added one run and Richardson scored once including the final RBI. Duck had three hits in the game and Hutcheson tallied the tying RBI. Madden recorded two hits and Moix and Barrett one each.
