Despite being only 30 miles apart, Berryville and Harrison have not played volleyball against each other in over a decade.

That changed on Tuesday night as the two teams had to meet in 4A-1 volleyball at Goblin Arena. When the night was over, Harrison had taken the best-of-five match in three sets, 25-15, 25-14, 25-19.

In other action, Harrison won the junior varsity match, 25-22, 15-25, 15-8. In junior high action, Harrison was victorious, 25-17, 23-25, 15-6. In a time shortened seventh-grade match, Harrison won, 25-3, 24-17.


The third set saw Harrison jump out to a lead, but ended with the Lady Bobcats pushing the squad.

A Brooklin Edwards quick gave the Lady Goblins a 2-1 lead early in the third set. Zoe Reynolds served two aces to push the lead to 4-1.

Berryville pulled within, 4-3, but an Edwards tip was followed by a Grace Strode kill. Edwards connected on another quick and Mattie Richardson served an ace to make it 8-5.

Harrison’s Olivia Ditmanson recorded a kill to double up Berryville at 10-5.

Taylor Swofford of Berryville scored the Lady Bobcats first offensive point of the set with a kill.

That point started a series where the two teams traded points. Linsey Choate started the run after taking a quick set to the floor for Harrison. Berryville scored the next point before Choate won a joust for Harrison.

The Lady Bobcats scored again, but that was answered by Choate on a quick kill to make the score 13-8.

Berryville was able to cut the Harrison lead to 14-13 after a Kelcee Hopper tip.

Harrison then went back to work.

Edwards had a kill that was followed by a Strode kill. Edwards then had a tip before blackline player Tailer Manen had a kill off of a Jasmine Armer pass.

Reynolds served up an ace and the Lady Goblins looked to be in control at 19-13.

Berryville had other plans. Lauren Compton had a kill that pushed her to the backline to serve. She later served up an ace and the Lady Bobcats had clawed back into the contest at 19-17.

Edwards ended the Berryville run with a tip and in the same rotation, Richardson served an ace to make the score 22-17.

Kelsey Smith served an ace to pull the Lady Bobcats to within three points at 22-19, but Harrison scored the last three points with one of those being a Ditmanson kill.

Berryville started the night with a 1-0 lead in the first set after Kate Powell served an ace. Edwards responded with a kill and Strode got a spike to find the floor on the weak side.

Berryville’s Compton had a tip and followed that up with an ace to push Berryville ahead, 3-2.

Edwards tied the set with a tip and Ditmanson matched Edwards with another tip to push Harrison ahead, 4-3.

Berryville tied the set at 4, but the Lady Goblins found their groove.

Edwards started a 4-0 Harrison run with a kill that saw the Lady Goblin middles doing the work. Choate had a block, Edward an ace and then Choate had her second block in the stretch.

Harrison’s run was stoped by a block from Hannah Morrell.

The Lady Goblins finished the set with an 17-10 run as the team scored 12 of their points on offense plays.

In the second set, Harrison took control of the set early. A tip from Hopper tied it at 1-1. Then the Lady Goblins got busy.

Edwards connected on two quick sets and Reynolds served up three aces to take a 7-1 lead.

Morrell had a kill and Smith had a backline kill to pull Berryville within, 9-5.

Harrison increased its lead to eight points after Edwards scored on a backline kill. Berryville was able to creep back to 14-9, but that was as close as they could get.

Leading Harrison in scoring was Edwards with 10 kills, seven tips and seven aces. Choate had five blocks, four kills and a joust; Reynolds six aces; Ditmanson four kills and two tips; Richardson two aces and one kill; Strode three kills; Claire Curtis and Manen one kill each.

Reynolds had 20 assists, Ella Kate Reynolds nine and Armer one.

Berryville was led by Compton with two kills, one tip and three aces. Morrell had three kills, one tip and one block; Hopper had two tips and one block; Maryn Jones and Swofford two kills each; Smith one kill and one ace; and Powell and Lilli Compton one ace apiece.
