Goblin football fans reminded to obey fire lanes
The next time you cheer on the Golden Goblins, make sure you pay attention to the red curbs.
The Harrison fire and police departments are asking fans of the Harrison High School football team to observe and obey fire lanes, designated by red curbs, around F. S. Garrison Stadium and the adjoining campuses.
Mike Toland of the Harrison Police Department and school resource officer for Harrison Middle School said that the Harrison football opener on Sept. 2 drew 5,000 people to the stadium. Unfortunately, many of those fans parked in fire lanes, making it difficult for emergency vehicles to get through in the case of an emergency.
Capt. Clint Nichols of the Harrison Fire Department said that parking in a fire lane can result in a $155 fine. He went on to say that, in addition to lots around the stadium and the adjoining middle school, fans can park in the Harrison High School lots just to the south. The Harrison School District will be providing buses and trolley to transport fans to the stadium.
Toland said he and other officers will be patrolling the parking lots more on game nights and will be writing out citations for parking in fire lanes.
Nichols went on to say that while a fire lane may not have a sign, the red curb designates it as such, and motorists should recognize that. He said the school district will be helping out by repainting the fire lanes next to the stadium and middle school. He emphasized that it was not just around the football stadium on game nights that citizens should obey fire lane restrictions.
“Fire lanes will be enforced throughout the town,” Nichols said.
